Bung Kits are part of the ER Tank System.  If you order a set of ER Tanks, it will come with a Bung Kit.

Why buy a Bung Kit if it comes with the tanks?  

There are several reasons why you might want to order a Bung Kit before ordering your ER Tanks.  A few examples:

• You'd like to delay the purchase of your fuel tanks until you're closer to completing the aircraft. Bung Kits are cheap and you can get the "infrastructure"in place early, making a future installation easier.

• You're project is rolling along nicely but HWA has a 6 week backlog on ER Tanks. You'd like to get moving with the ER Tank installation while your tanks are being built.

• You're "on the fence" and not sure whether your type of flying would benefit from ER Tanks. By installing the Bung Kit while your aircraft is under construction you can more easily add ER Tanks after the aircraft is flying.

The resounding theme here is to make sure the Bungs are installed BEFORE you put fuel in the main tanks and BEFORE the aircraft is painted.  If you don't, you can still put ER Tanks in your aircraft but you'll have to be extremely vigilant when it comes to preparing surfaces for Pro-Seal (The Bungs are Pro-Sealed and Pop Riveted to the Main Tanks - Much like the fuel sump bungs).  The bottom line is your surfaces must be absolutely clean.   Of course, a painted aircraft has some additional challenges compared to unpainted, most of which are associated with protecting the surfaces.

What does the Bung Kit do?

The ER Tank Bung Kit "taps" into the main fuel tank endwall and the brass plug seals the bung. Now your airplane is prepped for easy future installation of ER Tanks.

Where are the Bungs installed?

• In the RV-4 and RV-6 - Bungs are installed on the inboard rib of the main fuel tanks. (About 8" aft of the leading edge, near the bottom of the tank)

• In the RV-7, RV-8, RV-9, and RV-10 - Bungs are installed on the outboard rib of the main fuel tanks. (In the upper, aft corner)

• NOTE: The Bung Kits for the two different systems are NOT the same. Be sure you order the correct Bung Kit for your aircraft!

Why the difference in Bung location?

Bung location depends on whether your aircraft utilizes a gravity feed system or electric pumps to transfer the fuel.

What if you never install ER Tanks?

Bung Kits include brass plugs.  Install the Bungs, insert the plugs, and you're good to go, whether ER Tanks are eventually installed, or not.

How many Bung Kits do I need?

Only one Bung Kit is required per aircraft.  A single Bung Kit has two bungs and all the hardware necessary to "tap" both main fuel tanks.

Does the Bung Kit include all the materials for installation?

Everything except a dollop of Pro-Seal.  Of course, you can buy Pro-Seal through Van's or you can check with builders in your area.  It seems someone's always got a partial can laying around.  (Confirm it's not expired!)
